Week One: The Impostors (1998)

Title: The Impostors

Tone: A perfect indie-slapstick comedy to ring in the new year

Who:

Director-Stanley Tucci

Cast- Stanley Tucci, Oliver Platt, Steve Buscemi, Lili Taylor, Hope Davis (and way more)

When: 1998

What:

Set in the 30’s, Two starving actors accidentally stowaway on an ocean liner after trying to escape the wrath of an arrogant, boozing, and volatile Broadway star whom they insulted.

Why:

  • A great film to start off the new year, complete with champagne and fireworks, The Impostors has all the charm and laughs of the 30’s-era slapstick comedies it aims to emulate and executes it with an indie-film style that makes it a very unique and simply fun film.
  • The Impostors has an exceptional cast, chock full of those “Oh I love him/her!” folks, including Steve Buscemi, Hope Davis, Lili Taylor, Tony Shalhoub, Richard Jenkins, Allison Janney, Isabella Rossellini, and even an uncredited appearance by Woody Allen!
  • One of the most distinctive qualities about The Impostors is how apparent it is that the actors are enjoying themselves. All the performances have a playful and relaxed quality to them, I’m envious of how much fun they probably had on set.
  • I’m a sucker for slapstick and sight-gags and The Impostors really does them well. Below is a clip of one my favorite sight-gags from the film. Enjoy!

Update: Fox took down the clip I uploaded so here is a trailer that unfortunately doesn’t do the film justice.
